We tried getting Natalie's 4 month photos on a day she was simply too tired to put up with us. Although we got a smile or two she was much more interested in munching on her hand than in posing and eventually fell fast asleep. Hey, we all know how important naps are so we rescheduled and couldn't be happier with the results. Not only did we get endless smile we also managed to get a few shots with her adoring big brother. Like I said, her schedule ~not mine. Natalie is so precious, and I love the way her nose and eyes crunch up when she smiles. Babies rule, sometimes literally, lol

Time for Adults

I've had a few sittings recently with the young at heart. The first was with my parish priest, every week when I went to church I was bothered by the photo of him posted in the hallway. The white balance was way off & it was overexposed. I thought he deserved a better photo for all to see, so I gently approached him about retaking his portrait. To say he was thrilled was an understatement, it seems he didn't like that photo either. So one day last month we got together & got some great shots for him. We had to contend with the snow that day, surprise, surprise, but we had a lot of fun, now Fr. G has to choose his favorite for the hallway.

The second sitting was a just a few weeks ago, I had the privledge of photographing one of my favorite teachers grown children. Donna taught several of my Advanced Life Support classes and helped me on my path to becoming the paramedic I am today. Thanks Donna! It was a pleasure meeting your "kids" and a real joy to work with them. Below are some of my favorite shots from these sittings. Enjoy!

One of the best parts of photography is that you get to meet amazing people like the K Family. I've known Dad Eric since he was 2 years old, and a few weeks ago I had the honor of photographing their family. They are going through a tough time now, 5 year old Hayley was diagnosed with neuroblastoma about 5 weeks ago. This amazing family is facing this challenge with grace, dignity & faith that simply blows me away. Being the Mother of two grown sons, I know first hand just how wonderful little boys are and how they tug at your heartstrings. As you all know I volunteer for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a volunteer organization made up of professional photographers. We serve families who have a critically ill child and those who have lost a child. We provide the families with professional portraits of their children at no cost.
On January 25th, I was called to photograph a very ill little girl & her family. She was not expected to live past six months old. When I walked in the door I was asked if I would have time for a second session that day since there was a family who's baby would not make it through the day. After my first session, I was told the other little girl had just passed. After giving the family some time, I did my second session that day.
Although this may seem like a drain, it is actually something that fills me with pride & purpose. I think of my work with NILMDTS as a ministry, I know that the portraits I take are going to help the families heal, and provide them with some comfort.
Yesterday I recieved word that the first baby I photographed on that day passed away on Saturday night. (Below find plaques in memory of Heaven's newest Angels)

Candid Art is participating in the National Charity Model Search to select “America’s Cutest Kid” and to raise funds for charity.

We’re looking for cute children ages 18 months to 14 years old to model for a portrait to be entered into the contest.

Models Search Special:
$25.00 entrance fee, which includes a 15 minute model session and one image submitted to the national gallery. Entrance Fee is per child. Photo Sessions must take place before March 25, 2009, so call for your appointment ASAP! All photographs must be taken between 1/1/09 and 3/25/09 to be eligible for the contest. Confessions of an Empty Nest Mother

I must confess that my home will never grace the pages of a "lovely home & garden magazine." You know the ones, they have a pictorial parade of homes with elaborate Christmas decorations. Those families truly have amazing Christmas decor... every ornament on their 10 plus foot tree matches in color & style. The wreaths are all perfectly hung with bows in the same hue as the matching ornaments on the tree.
That I'm afraid will never be me, you see my ornaments are 20, 30 or more years old. My wreaths are faded, and the yarn is unraveling, most of the glitter has fallen off. Yet, I simply must put those decorations up every year. Some of the ornaments were my grandmothers, some she actually made; little knitted bells, oh how I miss her. Other ornaments and my ragged wreaths were made by two of my "main men." Every time I look at them I remember the beautiful blue -eyed boys who brought them home from school. There is not a boutique anywhere that can produce an ornament that will shine like the tinfoil and macaroni hanging on my tree; but maybe that's just the way they look through this Mom's teary eyes.
I love you Brad & Joshua, and I am very proud of the fine young men you have become. Merry Christmas & Many Blessings to you in the New Year. And to all my Family & Friends I wish you a wonderful Holiday Season & a Blessed New Year.

What is more precious than those first few months, I can't think of anything! Especially when it's your first baby, there is just something magical about that time. I recently spent an afternoon with Erin & Grant (I was also one of the photographers at their wedding!) getting to know their beautiful daughter Chloe. As you can see she wasn't 100% thrilled with getting her photo taken, but we captured some wonderful memories anyway!

They knew ahead of time that one twin would survive and one would not. They were such wonderful people, love just permeated the room even in this bittersweet moment. It's a great time of year for taking photos, soft light, beautiful colors and nice weather. I've been taking walks and having fun. Below are a few pics, the little park down the street, and the Barboursville Ruins, (a beautiful place ) if you haven't been there, you should take a little field trip. Tomorrow though I'll be "shooting people" I have a family sitting coming up, and I'm really looking forward to it. Not only are they great peeps, but I've got a new toy in my arsenal to try out on them. :) My big news: I've finally bought the 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens! woohoo.... I've played with it a little, but I'm really excited about doing the family portraits tomorrow... Stay tuned. Dottie

Matt & I went to The Outer Banks this past weekend & relaxed & had a great time. The weather was perfect and the beach was magical. It was a dual purpose trip really, last weekend will be our only weekend together until December 26th, talk about busy schedules! Today also happens to be our second anniversary, so we treated ourselves to a weekend away. We stayed at a wonderful B&B in Kill Devil Hills: The Cypress House Inn, if you get the opportunity to stay there we highly recommend it, wonderful hospitality, great food & good people! I did it again, photos are submitted from all over the world & twice in a week, my photograph was selected for sky of the day. Here it is ...

I went out West with my hubby, and we had a grand time. The trip started in Arizona where we met Evan, Matthew's oldest daughter's baby. Yes, I'm a step grandma, but I prefer to be called Memire. Evan is a total doll and he stole our hearts. We then drove to Southern California for a family reunion with my Mother's side of the family... Great times! Our trip finished up in Las Vegas, Nevada, (we drove my Mother home) and while visiting there we were able to take in a show. Awesome! Le Reve, if you ever get out to Vegas this is one to see! The day after we got back to Virginia my best friend's little girl had her first birthday party; is there anything more precious than that? Below are some photos... enjoy! Dottie

Calling all Photographers

Once again I was called to do a shoot for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep. A beautiful baby girl, 3 weeks, old perfect in every way, yet with an imperfect heart. Heaven recived a new angel on August 13th.

I leave these shoots feeling blessed in the knowlegde that my talents are being used to help grieving families. Our chapter here in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area is small, and we certainly could use a few more photographers in this area. If you have even an inkling that you might be able to "do this" please get in touch with us. It is a gift you give from your heart, and it comes back ten-fold. Peace, Dottie

Local Volunteer & Career Emergency Workers held a full scale exercise at the Charlottesville_ Albemarle Airport. Local citizens did a great job playing the patients/victims of a airplane crash. I was invited to come along & record the event. We are blessed to live in an area where the Fire & EMS systems work so hard & so well. Here are some photos from the event.

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

I announced a few months ago that I was accepted by the Charity Organization 'Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep' Last Friday evening I was called for the first time to provide my services. A young mother was in labor for her full term baby girl and no heartbeat was detected. The baby was born at approximately 03:00 am on June 28th, and I drove to UVA Hospital for my first NILMDTS shoot. It was a humbling experience. My prayers are with this young family as they grieve & struggle to heal. I know that my photographs are all this family will have in future years to remember this beautiful baby girl. For any parents who have suffered the loss of a child there is a wonderful support forum, for medical people, there is a forum for your input. Fellow photographers, if you think you would be able to provide these services, I urge you to check out the site. Give me a call, & I'll be happy to chat with you for a bit. Our artistry & gift can be an enormous step on the road to healing for these families.

Working with a Triple Master

On June 12th & 13th, I was in Weston, Florida (near Fort Lauderdale) taking part in The Rob Heyman Seminar. It was a small group of only five photographers, and we LOVED all of the individual attention. Triple Master Photographer Rob Heyman from Australia & his business savvy wife Shirl educated us for two full days. We received lessons in lighting, posing, business and tons more... my head is spinning. This was such a unique opportunity and I am so honored to have been a part of it. It was hosted by Diane Schafer a good friend and wonderful photographer. Check out her website here Thanks Diane for being such a great hostess!!! I love "catching" folks in their environment, and I recently had the pleasure of working with Drs. David & Rebecca Swett & their staff. Many moons ago before my paramedic career, I worked for these wonderful folks myself so I was honored when they asked me to come and photograph their staff and take some shots for their upcoming website. If you're a dentist phobe you've obviously never been to such a wonderful office. Quality care, great Doctors wonderful staff & a comfortable and warm atmosphere. The group formerly known as Metanoia, is now called 180. They are quite popular in Charlottesville, and I know most of the members, (former & present) from church. I was thrilled when they called and asked me to do a group pic of this fun-loving and very talented group.
